Telecommuting and Working from Home

By January 12, 2008 No Comments

Several of my clients who telecommute have asked me what they can do to stay focussed when they work from home. Here are some of my suggestions:

• Separate your workspace from the rest of the house. Some times
you may have to close your door and write down your hours of business and
caution:do not disturb

• Keep a work mindset so that you don’t answer personal calls
during work time and don’t feel the urge to fold laundry, or check on
investments.

• Giving yourself orders as the boss of you as your own employee. Sounds
strange but it works.

• Having a small business owner community where you help keep each other
focussed.

• Have your refreshments close at hand and use a timer when you take a
break

My clients have included organizations and employees from Kaiser
Hospital, Applied Materials, Lucent, Motorola, Renaissance Hotels,
McDonalds, Diageo, World Research Group, San Francisco Department of Public
Health, National Association of Female Executives, GE, Pillsbury Bakeries
and Foodservice, and the IRS. I am the co-author of the book “Putting
Diversity to Work, how to successfully lead a diverse workforce”, (Thomson
Learning,2003)
My articles and ideas have been featured in publications such as Human
Resource Executive, Black MBA, NY Times, Restaurant Hospitality Magazine,
