Three Ways to Deal With Difficult Clients in the Individual Services Industry
1- Let the person talk without interrupting. This may sound simple, but it takes work, particularly when you disagree, have a strong opinion or think you have an immediate solution. Many times people are difficult because they don’t feel heard. Allowing them to talk often diffuses their issues, and makes them more open and easy to work with.
2- Ask them why they signed up, or why they are working with you. This makes them realize the benefit of your services, and how it is in their interest. It empowers them to stop feeling like a victim (if that is their issue.)
3- Ask the person what would make them feel satisfied, or that their time has been well spent, or how you can work with them to meet their needs. This makes it feel more like a collaboration, than them vs. you.
