Three Ways to Appreciate Diversity and Be Inclusive This Holiday Season

  1.  Learn about other celebrations. Be aware that everyone doesn’t celebrate the same holidays or celebrate the same holidays, the same way. If you appreciate this diversity, then take the time do some research, and learn about the different holidays, what they mean and the diverse ways they are  celebrated. Share what you learned with other people. You may be seen as the most interesting person at the dinner table.
  2. Make no expectations. Realize that people celebrate a variety of holidays during this time of year, and some people choose to celebrate none. Be diversity curious and  talk to  people’s about their traditions. Don’t be afraid to ask people what holidays they celebrate, or what they do this time of year.  You might even get invited to celebrate with them.
Make people feel welcome and included. Invite them to share your holidays, and explain your traditions,
  3. Mark your calendar and your address book. Record holidays like Kwanzaa, Hanukah, Ramadan, and Diwali, and mark them in your calendar. Many calendars are  global and include that information. People who celebrate different holidays than yours, will feel good, and appreciate you more for taking the time to know them. This is a great way to appreciate the diversity of people, and make them feel more included this season.
